Anyone who knows me knows that I love to read. It's something I've always enjoyed and I think it's so important that we grow and nurture a love of reading for future generations. We are really missing our trips to the library but thankfully we have a rather hefty children's book collection and I've been making the most of our libraries online ebook loan service to keep my kindle well stocked with reading material. Here's what we've been reading this month....

There appears to have been a theme to Iris's most chosen books this month and that is that they are all interactive books. She's hit that stage where she tries to prolong bedtime so books that require us to play a little bit longer gives her the chance to push bedtime back a few extra minutes.

(link goes to lift the flap version as I cannot find version with the torch)

We purchased this book from The Book People in their closing down sale (does anyone really miss them? I do). It probably worked out around £1 but I would happily pay full price because it is such a fun book. Each page features bold black and white images and children can shine the UV torch around the page looking for hidden images. The storyline is about Halloween and has the potential to be scary but as you shine a light on the ghosts and ghouls you see that it's simply boys and girls in costumes. There is a twist at the end but I won't spoil that for you. It's a great book to demystify Halloween and teach young children that there is nothing to be afraid of. It's great fun looking for the hidden images and there's plenty of opportunities for extra learning such as counting.

This is a lift the flap book illustrated by the talented Axel Scheffler. I love how recognisable his illustrations are, like the Quentin Blake of Iris's generation. The storyline is about the tickle monster and how he loves to hide then jump out and tickle you. Initially Iris was a little scared by the thought of a monster jumping out at her but now she's a little older she finds it hilarious and loves to do some tickling. I've been informed that I don't read this book properly and that Daddy is the best at reading this book!

This book is one of my all time favourite interactive books. It's a never ending source of finding fun. Each page has a category i.e dogs/ cakes/ dinosaurs and there are 100 pictures of these things per page. The 100 images are hidden behind large flaps, on these flaps there are a few images from the 100 for your child to find. It's like a beginners Where's Wally?. We've had so much fun with this book that we've had to sellotape the pages in places as it's falling apart. We bought the book from The Works for £1.50 and have since found it on clearance for 50p! I can't believe such an amazing book could cost so little. I've bought copies for every child we know I love it so much!

This is a genre I wouldn't usually pick- Historical Fiction but I have to say that I really enjoyed this one. It's set in 1850s London and combines art, passion, obsession and freedom. It's a well thought out plot with characters that live in your mind long beyond the page. It has elements of a psychological thriller running alongside the evocative descriptions of Victorian London. It's a clever one and I found myself eager to read more.
